Vancouver & Districts Inter-Club Golf Committee – Zone 4 BCGA – Junior/Divot 2010

NEWS - June 30, 2010
June 28, 2010 Junior/Divot Championship @ Musqueam GC, Vancouver, BC
The school year is almost out, and the first Junior/Divot Tour event was held at the always enjoyable Musqueam Golf Centre in Vancouver. A full field of 40 junior boys and girls signed up and the weather cleared up just in time to allow the golfers to finish their round just in time for putting and chipping skills contests too.
The Junior/Divot Tour uses a Calloway Scoring System which calculates handicaps for the players based on their gross scores. Handicaps are deducted and a “Net” score is produced which gives the newer golfers a chance to win a pro shop gift certificate and special Junior/Divot trophy available for three divisions.
Division I Boys Age 10 & Under was no doubt the most exciting group to watch and it took a special “British Open Style” three hole “putt-off” to determine the champion. Vancouver's Dylan BERCAN fired a super 61 to tie for first place with pal Raymond Li, also of Vancouver, and just one more shot back from that was David HU of Vancouver at 62. Now for the story – Dylan's round included three birdies and an eagle “2” on the fourth hole to see him win the title and trophy for first place over a very strong field of golfers. Raymond had four birdieson the front nine alone to record his 61 and the “shot of the day” though belongs to David HU who birdied the fourth hole and then stepped up and “aced” the fifth hole – his first Hole-in-One! David wins the Low Net Trophy and a special Junior Linkster Hole-in-One Certificate. And thanks to David and family for providing drinks, chocolate bars and chips for everyone to celebrate!
Division II Boys Age 11-14 saw Surrey's Sy Lovan have four birdies on the front nine and cruise in with a smooth 62 to lap the field and take the first place Trophy. Best Net score was turned in Patrick Tan of Vancouver at 59.5, and we won't see him until his return from China in late August. Just last week though, Patrick recorded one of the most unusual “feats” in golf that the writer has ever heard – he scored 3 Hole-in-One's at the Queen Elizabeth Par 3 GC, all verified – and on the same 3rd Hole, a 65 yard hole at the Vancouver Parks Board course in Vancouver. Here is where it becomes really interesting. As the golf course was full and Patrick's group was waiting on every hole, Patrick used his Titleist Vokey 52 degree wedge to pop his shot into the Hole! Hooray! He had Holed Out In One – witnessed by his group and the group ahead – then had time to play a second ball just for fun – and he “holed out” in one again! AND then played another ball – precisely “into the hole again”, three shots, all into the hole – One Titleist and two Nike golf balls rested in the cup, witnessed by incredulous golfers on his tee and the group ahead! If the odds of making a Hole-In-One are ten thousand to one – what are the chances that one golfer could sink THREE CONSECUTIVE SHOTS INTO THE CUP? This has got to be one for the book – THE GUINNESS BOOK ! Asked about the shots – Patrick just shrugged his shoulders and said - “nothing to it – easy game!” By the way, that makes eight holes-in-one at Queen Elizabeth Park Par 3 golf course since last September when he first moved to Vancouver and joined the Optimist Junior Linkster Tour Canada. What a great game!
Junior Girls Divison players had some excitement and extra play too, with a playoff necessary to determine top spot for gross – between Shania Remandaban of Coquitlam and Yena Lee of Vancouver. A special “putt-off” resulted in a win for Shania and the Trophy for Low Gross. Yena's Net 61.5 was good enough for Low Net! It's great to see more junior girl golfers taking part these days and we hope the trend continues – the golf courses are very playable and enjoyable for all skill levels, boy and girl alike. Let's continue to encourage our young lassie's to follow the sun and play golf!
