Optimist International/Callaway Junior World Qualifying 2010 in British Columbia, Canada

NEWS - June 14, 2010

June 13, 2010 @ Cedar Ridge GC, Par 54, 1800 yds & Mission GC, Par 35, 2850 yds

Junior boys and girls of all ages gathered at two of our most magnificent and challenging sites today to vie for the precious “spots” available to two of junior golf's “mjaor's”. As always there were spectacular performances, remarkable shots, disappointments, best ever and those predictable and not so likely. Plenty of rain in the morning round and then the sun! Crazy!

Age 6 & Under “Pee Wee” division winner was Victoria's Jeevan Sihota who fired a terrific 56, just two over par, including three birdie two's. Trophy for Jeevan and a silver medal for Jason Xie of Vancouver, whose score of 56 allows him to first alternate for San Diego. If a player cannot attend for any reason, the alternate steps up to fill in any unused spots. Fast improving Zackary Wilensky of Coquitlam placed third, earning the bronze medal.

Age 7 – 8 “Pee Wee” division winner was Jess Lee of Surrey, whose solid three birdie 58 edged past the favorite, Ilirian Zalli of Vancouver. Third position and the bronze medal goesto Dylan Bercan, also of Vancouver. Dylan enjoyed the camping experience overnight. It is very possible that Ilirian will still get a spot to the Callaway Junior World, and our scores are compared with those in Alberta and other provinces in Canada. Ethan Choi, formerly of Port Moody is in contention too, as Ethan shot even par in CJGA qualifier in Alberta.

Age 9 – 10 “Divots”is another very strong division and it all depends on who can really play in a relaxed but determined manner. Perry Xin of Vancouver won the top spot and trophy despite being under the weather with flu like symptoms. Perry's smooth 57 just edged out Callum Davison of Duncan, meaning he too will qualify for San Diego. Callum's 18th hole birdie allowed him to finish ahead of Raymond Li of Vancouver. Callum's 58 to Raymond's 59 means Raymond is first alternate for a spot to San Diego. Our Committee have asked for special consideration for Age 6, 7-8, 9-10 and Junior Girls 9-10 age, for more “spots”

Junior Girls Age 7 – 8 “Pee Wees” winner is Surrey's Claire Lovan, returning a solid 71. Age 9 – 10 “Divots” division winner is Tiffany Kong of Vancouver, whose 59 is just an indication of how well she can play. Tiffany is exempt from here third place finish in the 2009 Callaway Junior World, allowing Sumie Francois of Burnaby to take the available spot. On the alternate list is Pitt Meadows' Cecile Kwon. Cecile certainly is a deserving alternate. For trophy and medal positions, Tiffany Kong is first, Sumie Francois takes the silver and Cecile Kwon receives the bronze medal – this for the overall Age 10 & Under division.

Boys Age 11 – 12 “Bear Cubs”division returned the lowest scores of the day, with Vancouver's Harry Huang firing a four under 50 at Cedar Ridge, including five birdies! His third nine at Mission GC was at par 36! Second spot and the silver medal to Henry Lee of Coquitlam, whose opening 18 of 55 was improved on with a one under score of 34 for the third nine. By the slimest of margins, one stroke, Sy Lovan of Surrey finishes third at 90 for the twenty-seven holes. Sy is first alternate in this division.

Age 13-14 “Tiger Cubs” division shows more terrific scoring, first from Surrey's Donald Qiu, whose opening 3 under par 51 at Cedar Ridge was folowed by a solid 36 at Mission's tough nine hole track. Trophy and spot to Donald and consolation to Chris Crisologo, whose 4 under par 50 at Cedar Ridge was a great start. The finish was not quite as strong at Mission but Chris had won a Callaway spot earlier in the year through the CJGA. The silver medal still looks good on him, and third place bronze to Richmond's Alexander Chen.

Junior Girls Age 11-12 and Up divisions, sees the classy and accomplished Lily He of Pitt Meadows win easily with solid scores of 56 for 18 holes at Cedar Ridge and 37 at the Mission GC. Her scores bettered veteran Shania Remandaban of Coquitlam. Most improved player in her age category may go to Vancouver's Grace Luo who is such a good sport and is up for any challenge to improve – and she has and will continue to do so. Tough day for Brooklyn Kraakman of Deroche as she fired a great even par round at Cedar Ridge and couldn't find the form for the last nine holes at Mission. Belive in yourself Brook! Yes you can
