Optimist Junior Linkster Tour(BC), May 8, 2010 @ Central Park GC, Par 54

NEWS - May 9, 2010

Burnaby Mountain Senior Men's Club sponsored the Age 10 & Under junior linkster golfers at the historic 1,155 yard Central Park GC, managed by the Burnaby Parks Board. The old growth timber and sunny blue skies really made it a hit for these youngsters and they enjoyed the turtles and variety of birds that flocked to the lake beside the first tee. The resident eagle put in an appearance too.

Age 6 & Under juniors saw 6 year old Jeevan Sihota of Victoria graduate to the Age 7-8 division, based on his outstanding play this spring and last fall. That opened up the chances for the new players and they welcomed the opportunity. Leading the field today was Burnaby's Nathan Boal who just edged out another first time Optimist Junior Linkster player, Jason Xie of Vancouver. Silver for Jason and Zackary Wilensky from Coquitlam wins the bronze medal for third.

Age 7 – 8 juniors had a new winner for a change, not unexpected either, as young David Hu of Vancouver used his three birdie “2's” to good advantage, firing a great 55 for the 18-hole round. Dylan Bercan of Vancouver was just one single stroke away despite his 4 birdie performance! Dylan happily takes the silver medal for second spot, with the favorite, Ilirian Zalli, also of Vancouver, winning the bronze medal for third spot. Great to see such close competition.

Age 9 – 10 juniors really put on a show for the crowd of fellow golfers and their parents. Raymond Li of Vancouver had a “Hole-in-One” on the second hole and get's the Optimist Junior Linkster special certificate for the feat. He also “aced” the same hole in a practice round a couple of days before! First place in the “divot” division had to be settled by a special “chip-off”, and again it was Raymond Li of Vancouver winning that over Burnaby's Sumie Francois. Both had tied with scores of 56! And, it was a round of juices and chips from Raymond's family for the tournament committtee and fellow competitors. Many thanks Raymond! Silver medal then, to Sumie and Perry Xin takes the bronze medal, just one stroke behind at 57. Perry birdied the last two holes to get close and is just getting over a week long illnes and absence from school.

Junior Girls division winner is the unassuming Claire Lovan of Surrey. Claire helps out with many small tasks before and after each event and has really shown her talent this year with great golf. This was Claire's best at Central Park. Second spot and the silver medal to Toby Lau of Vancouver with a 72, and bronze medal to Richmond's Alisha Lau. Great to see a big group of girls play!
